10 Tips to Prepare for Academic Interviews

Congratulations! You are near the end of your doctoral journey. If you want to go into academia then you are trying to finish up and prepare applications to secure interviews. It can all be very overwhelming and discouraging I wanted to share some tips that might be helpful during the interview process.

  1. Do research on the institution and department you will be interviewing with.

  2. Do research on the people you will be meeting with.

  3. Know how you will connect with research that is already happening in the department or at the institution along with the new areas you will bring.

  4. Have two courses in mind that you can start and two to three courses that you can automatically teach. If you don't currently have teaching experience try to get some before you leave.

  5. Know different agencies that you will reach out to for funding. Have some idea of how you will get your research lab started.

  6. You will be talking a lot even during lunch so you might not really eat, make sure to have snacks and water. Especially if you don't do your talk until the afternoon. (If you are in person)

  7. Anytime you do sit down to eat with the group make sure to participate in the conversation. This is their time to get to know you as a person and colleague. Be yourself !

  8. Stick to your time limit for your talk.

  9. Make sure to get rest and relax.

  10. To be patient this process takes a while but you will end up where you are suppose to be.

I am wishing you much success during your process.
